Meet Professor Grossett Oliver one of the speakers at the JSE Conference 2013

Professor Oliver will be a part of a panel that will examine: The Panama Canal, the Caribbean’s Biggest Opportunity – Professor Oliver will speak specifically on ”How can the Caribbean Amass the Capital to Fund this Ambitious Project”.

Gossett Oliver is a Professor of Engineering and also Vice President, School of Graduate Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech). 
 
Professor Oliver was successful at the Professional Review Interview at the Welding Institute, United Kingdom to join the prestigious ranks of Fellows of the Institute.  He is therefore now eligible to use the FWeldI designation.
 
Professor Oliver has had a distinguished career in Production Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Engineering Education. He is a EurIng,and Chartered Engineer and currently holds the highest distinction of City and Guilds of London Institute – Fellow of City and Guilds London Institute. Professor Oliver has supervised numerous research post graduate projects and has published extensively in refereed academic journals, having authored or co-authored some one hundred journal articles. One of his papers reports on innovative work done in using Blue Mountain coffee husks to enhance the surface hardening of plain low carbon steel. He holds a patent on this surface-hardening technique.
 
Professor Oliver was appointed as the academic head for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)/UTech Chair in Tribological Studies looking at the Effect of Wear and Friction on Mechanical Components used within the Jamaican Manufacturing Sector in 2011. The first of two Chairs approved for the Caribbean by UNESCO, the Chair which will facilitate the documentation of changes in tribological systems, gather the research findings and disseminate them to the affected institutions in order to understand the effects of the findings on the local industry. 
 
In 2012, he was bestowed the Order of Distinction (OD) in recognition of service to Engineering and Academia. In addition, the Council of the Institute of Jamaica (IoJ) nominated Professor Oliver for the award of a Silver Musgrave Medal (2009) for “distinguished eminence in the field of Engineering Education.”  The Musgrave Medals are awarded annually to selected persons for achievements in the fields of literature, art and science. He was also recently appointed Fellow for the Jamaican Institute of Management (JIM) and the Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE). 
 
At present Professor Oliver is a member of several professional governmental and non-governmental organizations including President for the CARICOM endorsed Caribbean Accreditation Council for Engineering and Technology (CACET) and Board Member – HEART Trust/NTA and Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI).
