JSE Investor Forum – Making Money from the Stock Market

THE JAMAICA STOCK EXCHANGE (JSE) IN MANCHESTER

(KINGSTON, June 17, 2010): On Tuesday, June 15, 2010 the Jamaica Stock Exchange and its sponsors LIME Jamaica Ltd. and the Gleaner Company journeyed to the cool, cool hills of Manchester to celebrate with Bellefield High School  which placed second in the JSE Stock Market Game for High Schools. KLAS Sports FM 89 carried the broadcast live from the school with their host Tony Young (TY).
The Stock Market Game for High School Students was developed in 2008, with the objectives of the game being to assist students to understand:
1.     How to trade in the stock market
2.     How to manage an equity portfolio
3.     The costs and benefits involved in economic decision-making.
The game is expected to help promote public understanding of the stock markets and the economy and to create awareness about the role of the stock market in a country’s economic development.
The atmosphere was one of jubilation as teachers and students hosted the JSE and their sponsors. Toney Young in his usual style was able to get the best out of all participants. The General Manager of the Stock Exchange congratulated the students and staff of Bellefield, a non-traditional high school, on their accomplishments thus far and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence. The Principal, Mrs. Elise Thompson, was pleased with the school’s performance and congratulated the students and the teachers for their hard work and dedication. But she was not satisfied with second place and pledged her support for those who would be working harder to ensure that Bellefield will emerge as the victor in the 2010/11 competition.
The JSE team continued their journey to the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville, which was the venue for the second Public Education Outreach for the year, themed: “How to Make Money via the Stock Market”. The function started with a welcome address from the President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce Mr. Keith Smith, followed by the JSE’s General Manager Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest’s presentation speech on the topic: “How does the Stock Market work?” The presentation was delivered in simple, direct language which enabled participants to fully grasp the subject matter and in so doing, demystified the operations of the Exchange.
The JSE’s Chief Regulatory Officer Mr. Wentworth Graham, spoke on the topic: “Why is Regulation Important to the Stock Market?” A lively, question and answer segment followed as members of the audience eagerly sought the assurance that their investments would be protected. It was clear that many of the participants have been touched by the fall of the unregulated financial organizations, which were popular a few years ago. Last but certainly not least, NCB Capital Markets, Wealth Advisors Mr. Omio Green was then left to informed participants on the benefits of investing in the market and recommending  stocks to watch in 2010 and beyond. His presentation explored the advantages and disadvantages in purchasing certain stocks.
