Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) Engages Philadelphia Diaspora

The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE), created history when on an invitation from Team Jamaica Bickle formed part of the delegation to the 119th staging of the Penn Relays and Jamaica’s 50th year involvement. The visit which extended from April 24 – 26, 2014 resulted in the Exchange engaging with businesses and potential investors from the Diaspora.

On Thursday, April 24, 2014, the visit by the JSE began with a tour of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, owned by NASDAQ/OMX and which concentrates mainly on Options Trading. The team comprising of Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, General Manager of the JSE, Mr. Neville Ellis, Marketing Manager, JSE and Mr. Christopher Chaplin, Coordinator for Jamaica Bickle, was taken on the tour by Mr. Michael Blackson, Options Exchange Official Managing Director, On-Floor Surveillance.

The Group was then invited to the FIS Group to meet with traders and potential investors where discussions took place regarding trading in Jamaica’s equities market and other investment opportunities in Jamaica. Mrs. Street Forrest took this opportunity to highlight the benefits of investing in Jamaica and, in particular, the Stock Market.

The JSE also participated in the Town Hall meeting which was held at the Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church where Mrs. Street Forrest presented to a large group of potential investors and once again highlighted Jamaica as a destination for investors. She told the audience that there were several different projects that investors could target, especially given the opportunities available through the Logistics Hub, Agriculture and the Stock Market.

On Friday, April 25, 2014, Mrs. Street Forrest met with private equity investors in New York who showed great interest in the Jamaican Stock Market, while Mr. Ellis and Mr. Michael Johnson, Senior Marketing Officer, met with over 500 Diaspora Members between April 25 and April 26 at the relays.

The JSE pledges to keep in touch with the Diaspora to ensure continuous dialogue and commitment of its members to invest in Jamaica and in particular companies listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange.
