Governor General For JSE’s Best Practices Awards

Governor General Sir Kenneth Hall, along with his wife Lady Hall will once again be in attendance of the Jamaica Stock Exchange’s Best Practices Award which will be held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. The guest speaker this year will be the Honourable R. Danny Williams, O.J., J.P., and C.L.U. This award was established in 2004 to honour Listed Companies and Brokerages who have consistently upheld International Best Practices throughout their organization and is held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency Governor General Sir Kenneth Hall.

Scotia Bank Jamaica Limited won the coveted 2006 Governor General Award’s for Excellency as they were adjudged the best overall company for 2006. The Best Practices Award Committee under the Chairmanship of Professor Neville Ying has completed its deliberation for the 2007 period and awards will be made in six categories this year. The sixth category is the new PSOJ/JSE Award for Corporate Governance, which was added to enhance good Corporate Governance among Jamaican Companies. According to Mrs. Street Forrest, General Manager of the Jamaica Stock Exchange” this award is timely given the turmoil in the global economy, which has brought into sharp focus the need for good corporate governance practices within all organizations, especially listed companies, who need  to ensure transparency within their organizations to keep shareholders assured”.

The other Awards are:

JSE BEST PRACTICES ANNUAL REPORT AWARD: “Which is to encourage public listed companies to produce clearer more reader-friendly annual reports and to provide greater insight into companies’ financial affairs, governance practices and business activities”.

THE JSE BEST PRACTICES CORPORATE DISCLOSURE AND INVESTOR

 RELATIONS:” Which is to recognize and encourage companies to make timely and accurate reports and announcements to the JSE and maintain good investor relations with the wider investing Public.”

JSE BEST PERFORMING COMPANY: “Which is to identify and recognize outstanding performance by listed companies in enhancing shareholder value in the areas of return on capital, improved profitability and direct return on shareholdings.”

BEST PRACTICES INVESTOR RELATIONS AWARD (STOCKBROKERAGES): “To recognize excellence in the service provided by stockbrokerages to investors.”

The Award will be presented to the stockbrokerage that provides investors with the best services”.

 JSE BEST PRACTICES WEBSITE AWARD (TO INCLUDE STOCKBROKERAGES): “To encourage listed companies and stockbrokerages to raise the quality and efficiency of the dissemination of information to the investing public via the website”.

Forty five Listed Companies and Eleven Brokerages vyed for the various Awards and to be crowned the overall winner of the prestigious Governor General Award for Excellence.
