(KINGSTON December 20, 2017): The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, had as its guest Senator Dr. Floyd Morris who sounded the Stock Market Electronic Bell to signal the Opening of the Market. Dr. Morris also highlighted the successful launch of his autobiography: By Faith Not by Sight. The audience comprising his publisher, peers and JSE’s Staff was visibly moved by the recount of his journey from humble beginnings, glaucoma diagnosis in High School, failure at exams due to deteriorating vision, and overcoming subsequent loss of eyesight, to become ‘Jamaica’s first blind Senator’ and attaining the highest degree in 2017, his Doctoral Degree.

Speaking at the Market Opening Ceremony, Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, Managing Director of the JSE, told the audience she was particularly impressed with how Senator Dr. Floyd Morris overcame childhood adversity and now celebrates the successful launch of his book ‘By Faith, Not by Sight’. “Senator Morris shows how perseverance and the right attitude can propel you to greatness. The Jamaica Stock Exchange is excited to share in these success stories and to highlight them to the public, as this is how a country is built, by individuals who triumph in the face of adversity”, said Mrs. Street Forrest.

“Today, I am speaking about excellence, as it is only companies that attain excellence are listed on the board of the Exchange. These companies also have to stay on the cutting edge and continue to create value for the customer and their stakeholders. Excellence will guarantee that you stay relevant. I am afraid of poverty and everyone in society should, and one of the way to overcome poverty is to invest in the markets, I do! The market is one of the best way possible in creating individual wealth and of course I have seen the value of investing in the Stock Market”, stated Senator Dr. Floyd Morris in his address. He next encouraged Jamaicans to put their trust in God and to rise above the challenges as one can achieve no matter the circumstance.

Mr. Arnaldo Brown, former Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the audience, “I had to be here to support my colleague this morning at the Stock Exchange given our journey together. He also said that he Market is an integral pillow of the economy as it mobilises capital for businesses to create goods and services for the people. I must congratulate Mrs. Street Forrest, the Managing Director, for her hard work at the Exchange and, in particular, in lobbying the Government to keep the Junior Market incentives. I see the Junior Market as a shining beacon in the country and this must be applauded. I congratulate my friend Floyd on his tremendous achievements and in particular the successful launch of his book. This is what a success story is made of and if we put our minds to it, we can achieve it. “
