BARBADOS PM DAVID THOMPSON FOR JSE CONFERENCE
(KINGSTON, NOVEMBER 11): Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. David Thompson has confirmed that he will attend the Jamaica Stock Exchange’s Fourth Annual Regional Conference on Investments and the Capital Markets to be held at the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club in Montego Bay from January 27-30, 2009.
The Barbadian Prime Minister will address the opening gala banquet, which will mark the start of celebrations for the JSE’s 40th anniversary and honour former Jamaican Prime Minister, the Hon. Edward Seaga, who was one of the main architects of Jamaica’s capital market. The theme of this year’s regional conference is: “Competition or Collaboration”.

The event is being held against the backdrop of unprecedented changes in the international financial arena and accordingly panel discussions and workshops will examine topics such as what went wrong within the world’s economies, prescriptions to cope with the resulting regional tremors and alternative energy solutions. One of the hot topics at the conference will be international financial meltdown with presenters looking at the perspectives, solutions and the impact of these crises on regional capital markets. Another discussion topic will be the balance between regulations to protect social objectives, as against the cost of regulation to businesses. That session will examine current regulatory reforms within the territories.
Leveraging loans for non-traditional sectors such as sports and entertainment will also come under the microscope, as well as accumulating wealth through our regional stock markets and regional private equity.
Regional Stock Exchange heads in attendance will be Wain Iton, of the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange as well as Marlon Yarde, of the Barbados Stock Exchange.
