2009/2010 JSE Stock Market Game for High School Sponsored by The Gleaner Company Ltd. Commences on October 19, 2009.
The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) and the Financial Services Commission (FSC) held a very successful National Investment Education Week (NIEW), from September 27 – October 3, 2008 under the distinguished patronage of the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Kenneth Hall. The main feature of the week was the launched of the JSE Stock Market Game for High School sponsored by the Gleaner Company.
At the JSE/FSC Expo which was held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 there were over 2,600 attendees and over 70% of the attendees were young people. It is believed that once they have grasped the knowledge of prudent decision making this will give them an early start to understand the financial market. It is against this background that the JSE launched the Stock Market Game for High Schools. The keynote speaker was the Minister of Education, the Honourable Andrew Holness who felt that the event was timely and would afford students participating in the game an opportunity to become financially savvy.
The game was held over a 3 months period after which Hillel Academy walked away with the first and second individual prizes as well as the overall school trophy to win the first Jamaica Stock Exchange Stock Market Game for High Schools in 2008/2009.
The 2009/10 Stock Market Game will commence in October and the period of the competition has been extended to 8 months in order to give participating schools more time to understand the market and the opportunity to be among the prizes. We also have anew sponsor LIME Jamaica Ltd., on board to join The Gleaner Company in its second year.
