GAME RULES

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of the Jamaica Stock Exchange’s (JSE’s) Stock Market Game are to help students understand:

  1.  How to trade in the stock market
  2.  How to manage an equity portfolio
  3.  The costs and benefits involved in economic decision-making.

The Stock Market Game will also help to promote public understanding of the stock markets and the economy and create awareness about the role of the stock market in a country’s economic development.

 

WHAT IS THE STOCK MARKET GAME?

The Stock Market Game is a simulation game for the Jamaica Stock Exchange developed to promote a better understanding of the stock market and how it works.  It is aimed at High School students in 3rd to 6th form.  It is designed to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills and build confidence and self-esteem. Most importantly, the stock market game will instill an understanding of the need to save and invest at an early age.

 

LIKELY IMPACT ON STUDENTS

The Stock Market Game allows students to:

  1.   Play a simulated game of trading on the Jamaica Stock Exchange using virtual funds in competition.
  2.   Build and manage their own portfolio based on stock traded on the    Exchange.
  3.   Compete against other students;
  4.   Assist with building skills and gaining investing experience;
  5.   Provide research resources and current market news to help make    informed decisions;
  6.   View portfolio summaries, stock performance, order details and    transaction history;
  7.   View charts showing portfolio performance;
  8.   View game summary highlights showing scores/positions for team.

 

BASIC OPERATIONS AND RULES

1.     Any student that previously participated in the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) Stock Market Game for High School will not be eligible.
2.     Students will be required to complete a Registration Form and email it to the Jamaica Stock Exchange to charlette.nugent@jamstockex.com; jsemarketing@jamstockex.com
3.  The competition will run for the period August 17, 2020 – September 25, 2020 after which the JSE will determine the winner.
4.     No student will be eliminated.
5.    The top 5 students with the highest portfolio values over the initial sum ($100,000.00) at the end of the period will be announced the winners
6.   Each student will be given $100,000.00 of virtual funds, to invest in common stocks listed on the JSE Main & Junior Markets. Stock prices are based on real time market prices during the hours of 9:30 a.m. to the close of the market at 1 p.m.
7.     Selection of stocks for the portfolio after the close of the market will be based on the day’s closing price
8.     The portfolio trading represents ‘true’ activities in the market.
9.     Portfolio value will be based on the end of day/real time pricing.
10. The Game will provide a summary page showing the ranking of each student based on portfolio performance and value.
12. Students will be able to view portfolio summaries, stock performance, order details and transaction history.
13. It will be the responsibilities of the student to conduct their own research and review analysis done by Brokers on their websites

GAME AND PORTFOLIO MANAGER RULE

  1.   All Trades (Buying & Selling) can only be done from 1:30 p.m. – midnight each day, Monday to Friday
  2.   All trades must be done on the same day (stocks bought or sold must trade on that day of the transactions)
  3.   All buy and sell orders must be a minimum of 100 shares.
  4.   Each student begins the game with $100,000.00 of virtual money in thier portfolio.
  5.   End of day game transactions are priced at market daily closing prices
  6.   There will be JSE, JCSD fees charged for transactions
  7.   There will be GCT charged for transactions
  8.   There will be no broker fee charged for transactions
  9.   No Interest is paid on cash balance in the portfolio
  10.   A record of student portfolio and transactions will be available daily
  11.   Students will not be allowed to reset their portfolio
  12.   Return on portfolio will be aligned with Corporate Actions such as dividends, bonus, stock, split etc
  13.   It is the responsibility of the student to learn and abide by all rules.

A training/tutorial will be provided to participants of the game on how to use the technology and how to access the JSE’s website and to assist with data gathering/research.

PRIZES: CASH AND STOCK VOUCHER

Prizes to the top five students who achieves the higher value to their portfolio at the end of the period. No prizes will be awarded for portfolios less than the initial $100,000 regardless of the placement.

 

ADMINISTRATION OF THE STOCK MARKET GAME

1. Access to the game is through JSE’s website at http://www.jamstcokex.com

2.  Administration and monitoring of the game will be done by selected members of the JSE and will be governed by the rules outlined.

3.    User roles are defined to ensure transparency and unauthorized access.

4.    Portfolio details for all students can be viewed by game administrator only.

5.    Each student can view/update their own portfolio.

6.    99.9% server uptime is guaranteed by the website hosts. There also are other levels of redundancy employed on the server hardware and network infrastructure.

 

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

1.    Internet Access:- To use the JSE Stock Market Game, you must be able to access the Internet, either through a dial-up modem that connects through a phone line or via Wireless connection.

2.    Software:- We recommend you use the latest version of either Internet Explorer or Firefox as your Web browser. You can download the software for free and check the system requirements by clicking on the links below:
       1.  Microsoft Internet Explorer 11

       2.   Firefox 41 or 41

While each browser has its own software and hardware requirements, we recommend you use The Stock Market Game with Windows. You will need JavaScript and cookies enabled to run The Stock Market Game. You can change these settings in the browser’s Preferences. You need to unblock pop-ups and will need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view the user manuals.
