The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) held its 14th National Investor Education Week (NIEW) from October 2–8, 2021, which coincided with the World Investor Week, also promoting investor education. To show unity with the World Investor Week, NIEW’s final day of activities, on Friday, October 8, 2021, the JSE ‘Rang The Bell’ to close the markets to commemorate World Investor Week.
The Week’s activities, which were organized around the theme, Savings and Investments: How to Build and Create Generational Wealth During and Post COVID,” started with a Church Service at the New Kingston Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Kingston, where Mrs Suzette Whyte, JSE’s Financial Controller, brought greetings on behalf the Stock Exchange. The message was presented by Pastor Adrian Johnson, who highlighted the need for wealth creation and the importance of distributing some of the wealth to the less fortunate.
On Monday, an Outside Broadcast promoting the Exchange’s and corporate partners’ products and services, was hosted by the ‘Too Live Crew’ comprising announcers Dahlia Harris and Johnny Daley of RJR 94 FM, a popular programme that reaches over 400,000 listeners across Jamaica, from various socio-economic backgrounds. This was followed by a Youth Forum on Tuesday, which sought to guide youths on how to create wealth from an early age. The Guest Speaker was Ms Shelly Ann Morgan, Manager of Investment Services at Sagicor Investments Jamaica Limited, who spoke on ‘How to Buy & Sell Shares During COVID-19, for Beginners’.
On Wednesday, there was an Education Open House. The main sponsor being NCB Capital Markets Limited, which educated the participants on ‘How to Read a Balance Sheet and Opportunities in Initial Public Offering & Additional Public Offering. There were other excellent presentations, who spoke on Protecting Your Investments; Repairing Your Credit; Social Giving to Worthy Causes; among the topics.
Thursday covered the Canadian Connection with the Jamaican High Commissioner in Ottawa, Canada, bringing greetings. The endeavour represents a partnership with the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa, which aims to educate and facilitate Canadians in the Jamaican Diaspora invest on the Stock Exchange in particular, and Jamaica in general.
On Friday, it was ‘A Day with the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange (JSSE). Chairman, Professor Neville Ying, in his welcome, spoke to how giving, especially from the Diaspora, has assisted the Jamaica economy to stay afloat, particularly, during the Covid pandemic. He said, however, more needed to be done to assist the projects so they could help communities and youths at risk.
The week of activities ended with a ‘Ringing of the Bell Ceremony’ to mark World Investor Week.
