JSE Stock Market Game for High Schools Analysis as at March 11, 2010

Shawn Parker of Bellefield High School doubled his initial $100,000.00 portfolio to hit the $200,000.00 mark, in only six months, in the JSE Stock Market Game for High Schools sponsored by The Gleaner Company and LIME Jamaica Ltd. 

 

Shawn Parker of Bellefield High held onto his first place position since January with a portfolio value of JMD 221,559.70, of which 80% is in equities. He has a cash balance of JMD 44,359.70.  During the month of March, Shawn benefitted from his holdings in Pan-Jamaican Investment Trust Ltd (PJAM), Carreras Ltd (CAR) and Jamaica Producers Group Ltd (JP), which were all profitable.

 

The chasing pack is led by second place Dexter Smith from Calabar High School, with a portfolio value of JMD 179,345.27. Dexter has an unrealized gain of JMD 79,345.27 to date. Dexter’s portfolio has dvanced in part due to his trading in Scotia Group Jamaica Ltd (SGJ) and Carreras Ltd (CAR).

 

Matthew Williams from Campion College jumped to third place, from fourth last month. Matthew’s portfolio is currently worth JMD 152,050.00, up JMD 21,482.00 since February 11, 2010. Matthew’s portfolio has benefitted from his stakes in SGJ, Cable & Wireless Jamaica Ltd (CWJA) and Capital & Credit Financial Group Ltd (CCFG).

 

The students’ portfolios are increasing in value due mainly to their holdings in blue chips stocks. The JSE’s Main Index has advanced 13% since February’s lows, with stocks trading at new 52-week highs. Jamaica Broilers Group Ltd (JBG) has reached nine new 52-week highs since the start of 2010, Grace Kennedy Ltd (GK) is up 62% year-to-date, while PJAM has climbed 24% over the same period.

 

Bellefield High remains in the top spot this month, with a portfolio value of JMD 418.01k (of which 84% is in equities and the remainder in cash). To date, the school has more than doubled its portfolio. Calabar High, whose portfolio is worth JMD 300.4k, made it clear that it, would remain a first-place contender. Calabar added 31% to its portfolio value this month and climbed back up to number two after slipping to fourth place in February’s standings. Campion College rounded up the top three, holding onto its third place position in March with a portfolio value of JMD 257.53k.

 

Last year’s winner, Hillel Academy moved up slightly and now stands in 5th place, up from 6th in February. Hillel’s portfolio is worth JMD 245.01k.
With the stock market continuing on an upward trend, the students stand to see significant gains with two months to go in the competition.
