JSE e-Learning Campus Orientation

Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, General Manager of the JSE, making her presentation to the first cohort, at the JSE’s e-Learning Orientation, held at the Jamaica Pegasus on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Please enjoy Mrs. Street Forrest presentation below!

Good Morning! It is indeed my pleasure to welcome you all to the orientation of this, the first cohort of the Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Services Management. This diploma which will be attained through the JSE e-Learning Campus was designed and developed with you, our participants in mind. We understand that as rising and executive players in the financial market, your jobs are demanding and so this blended experience comprised of e-learning and face to face lectures is vital. We can assure you that during the year that you will be with us, you will have a very rich experience as you take advantage of the flexible approach to receiving continuing education.

At the Exchange, we believe it is important, especially within the Financial Sector for persons who offer advice or provide financial services to keep their education and credentials current. Your presence  here today confirms that you also accept that it is risky and foolish to believe that the same certification that took us in the market place a year or two ago will allow us to make the same quality decisions we made then, now. The rapidly changing financial landscape demands continuous professional education and I applaud your decision to take on this challenge.
I say challenge as the course is intended to do just that- challenge us in a practical way. The course contents and delivery will be dynamic, current and rigorous and while grounded in theories, will be heavily complemented by research and real life experience.  It is with this in mind that the lecturers and tutors here today and those you will meet in the coming months wear the dual hat of academia and practitioners. They have been hand-picked for the scope of knowledge and experience they have in their respective areas of the field.

There is no doubt that the Post Graduate Diploma is not designed for participants who will not take the material seriously. In order to foster the best learning outcome we urge participants to take advantage of the lecturers, tutors and administrators who are here to ensure that you have a rich experience. To complement your learning experience, it is also necessary to avail yourselves of the many features of the eCampus.

The JSE’s eCampus tagline is ‘enabling continuing professional education for the financial services industry’. This really is saying to our participants that we are here to stay. You will be pleased to learn today that, in order to live up to our objective to provide continuous education, we plan that there will be workshops and other units covering current and topical issues. Credit will be given to participants in these courses and all graduates of the Diploma in Financial Management Services will benefit from special rates. Graduates will also continue to have the privilege of using the e-Campus facilities excluding chat-room and new course material.  As you are aware, the Diploma is not yet accredited by the University Council of Jamaica but our objective is that we will have this accreditation in time for your graduation.

The Diploma is now a requirement for traders, advisors and middle and back office managers in the equities market. Therefore I applaud all participants here, whether in the equities market or generally in the Financial Industry. You are trailblazers and pioneers. You have taken the leap of faith in this new programme that is being offered, and we will not disappoint you. Some persons are self funded while others are company sponsored, either way it represents a big investment in time, money and effort. We will be working with our regulators and other institutions of learning, such as Northern Caribbean University to get the best blend of resources and requirements in order to ensure that your return on investment outstrip any other form of investment, even investment in equity.

The quality of the programme, which I am sure you will attest to as you study, is only possible because of the content that is prepared and delivered to you. I want to recognize all our Faculty members and ask that you take time out today during the orientation session to interact with them.

We assure you though that while we do all this, the greatest input will be yours. Again, please accept my congratulations for the bold step that you have taken in furtherance of your career through this continuing professional education course of study. I wish you all the very best.
