The Jamaica Social Stock Exchange (JSSE), the social arm of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) handed over a cheque for J$494,000 to Ministry of Education, Youth & Information (MOEY), which was received by the Minister of Education, Youth & Information, the Honourable Fayval Williams, MP, at the Ministry, on December 3, 2020.

The funds, accumulated from donations via the JSSE’s platform, came on the heels of the launch of ‘Connect a Child Ja Initiative’, on October 29, 2020, where the Ministry of Education, Youth & Information, National Education Trust and corporate partners joined together to provide laptops or tablets to 100,000 students who are deemed to be in need, in the following categories:

i. Special Needs Students
ii. Students Not on PATH and
iii. Students in State Care

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was brought into sharp focus, the need for children to be online and receive online learning. The MOEY in its nation-wide appeal announced that the Ministry did not want any child left behind. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, the JSE through the JSSE, was keen to assist in the ‘Connect a Child Ja Initiative’ and approached the Ministry to support the process.

“The JSE though it social arm, the JSSE, has risen to the challenge to assist in this initiative, which will significantly contribute to improving the learning and development of our children, the future of our country. We are assisting the the Ministry of Education in its drive and they can be assured of our 100% commitment to the process,” said Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, JSE’s Managing Director.

Also giving strong support to this worthwhile initiative, Miss Nora Blake, JSSE’s Manager said, “The role and responsibility of the JSSE is to assist in improving the social fabric of our society, therefore when this initiative was launched by the Ministry of Education, it was natural for the JSSE to become involved. We are looking forward to working with the Ministry of Education, Youth & Information to accomplish their goal to strengthen our education system and empower our children.”

“We join with the Ministry to encourage Jamaicans, local and in the Diaspora, to continue to contribute to nation-building through education, by sending in their donations to this noble initiative by using the JSSE’s payment portal,” added Mrs. Street Forrest.
