Governor General Opens The Stock Market

The Jamaica Stock Exchange and the Financial Services Commission present National Investor Education Week (NIEW) under the distinguished patronage of the Governor General His Excellency Sir Kenneth Hall.

The week of activities commenced on Saturday, September 27, with a church service at the KencotSeventhDayAdventistChurch where His Worship The Major Desmond McKenzie brought greetings on behalf of the Downtown Community. The message was delivered by Pastor Herman Ming. Pastor Ming implored the JSE and the FSC that in all their educational programme for the week that they must “Go with God”.

On Monday, September 29, 2008, at 9:30a.m the Governor General signaled the opening of the Stock Market with the new Bell Ringing Ceremony. This was a historic occasion as it the first event of its kind in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The JSE shared a very proud moment with Their Excellencies who commended the JSE on this initiative. Members that were on hand to witness this occasion were: the Acting Executive Director of the FSC, Mr. George Roper, Miss Sandra Shirley Deputy Chairman of the JSE, Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest General Manager of the JSE and members of the JSE and FSC staff.

In a climate of financial uncertainty where the effectiveness of regulators elsewhere is being questioned, the FSC and the JSE took the opportunity to brief their Excellencies on how regulations are enforced by both institutions and how the regulatory framework and the enforcement of the rules redound to ensure a viable capital market. After the occasion the Governor General thanked the Management team of both institutions for a very stimulating and informative discussion.

On Tuesday, September 30, 2008 the week continues with a media briefing at the FSC office at 11:00a.m.and a public forum at the Terra Nova Hotel at 5:30p.m.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2008, the discussion on Investment will continue at the JSE/FSC Expo at the Hilton Kingston Hotel. One of the major topics will be the issue of insider trading and how it is dealt with. A major highlight of this expo will be the launch of the JSE’s Stock Market Game for High Schools by the Minister of Education, the Honourable Andrew Holness. This educational product will assist students in their quest to learn about prudent investing and will give them an early start in understanding the financial services market.

The week will culminate with a public outreach at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School on Thursday, October 2, 2008 and a Luncheon at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Friday October 3, 2008.
