Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica Visits the Jamaica Stock Exchange

The Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Tian Qi, is presented with a copy of The Jamaica Stock Market Review by the Managing Director of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE), Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, during his visit to the JSE on November 8, 2018.

The Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Tian Qi, and his delegation visited the Jamaica Stock Exchange on November 8, 2018, to learn more about the local Stock Market, and how the JSE and China could build a deeper relationship.

Mrs. Marlene Street Forrest, Managing Director of the JSE, in the meeting spoke about the products and services that the Exchange offers to the market. In addition, she asked the Ambassador to partner with the JSE to offer a course in Mandarin, the official language of the Chinese, to reduce the language barrier existing between the local business sector and Chinese nationals in Jamaica, as well as in China. This, she highlighted, will be an excellent vehicle through which partnership and a sustainable relationship could be developed. She took the opportunity to commend the Chinese Ambassador and his team for their past support of the Exchange’s Regional Capital Markets Conference, and expressed her hopes for their continued involvement with the JSE. She then invited them to support the JSE’s next Regional Conference, to be held from January 22-24, 2019 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. At the Conference, the JSE will be showcasing equipment recently purchased from China, which will be used to stimulate the local manufacturing industry.

The Chinese Ambassador congratulated the Jamaica Stock Exchange for being accorded the best performing Stock Exchange in the world so far this year and spoke of the possible areas of collaboration between the JSE and China. He stated that anticipates collaboration in the following areas:

  1. Cross listing of Chinese Securities;
  2. Assisting Small and Medium size businesses, local and internationally, to raise capital on the market to finance their businesses; and
  3. To build a stronger financial relationship between the Chinese and the Exchange.
